Book 11: The Black Book of Colors

by: Menena Cottin

Summary
The illustrations of this book, appear on the right-hand pages and consist of sleek black-on-black embossed graphics. The raised and textured drawings of leaves, feathers and raindrops usher us into a world without color. On the left-hand pages, sparse lines of text are printed in flat white type against a solid black background beneath a Braille translation. Turn to the last page to learn the Braille alphabet.
Thoughts
Ironically, it’s hard to look past the arresting surface beauty of this book. Once you do take a closer look, however, it becomes clear that the images are meant to be read by touch rather than sight.
The book is about what a blind child named Thomas "sees". To him, “red is sour like unripe strawberries and as sweet as watermelon. It hurts when he finds it on his scraped knee." Apart from the empathy they encourage for those who lack the gift of sight, what the authors have done so well is remind us that in life we’re all in the dark a good part of the time, and that at such times imagination can serve as a third eye — the eye we need.
Em LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book!
We have read it at least 20 times.
She informed me that they have studied braille at school.
She asked if we could but this book, I think we just may have to do that.

Book 10: Sense and Sensibilty and Sea Monsters

Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters
by: Jane Austen and Ben Winters

Summary
Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters expands the original text of the beloved Jane Austen novel with all-new scenes of giant lobsters, rampaging octopi, two-headed sea serpents, and other biological monstrosities.
As our story opens, the Dashwood sisters are evicted from their childhood home and sent to live on a mysterious island full of savage creatures and dark secrets.
While sensible Elinor falls in love with Edward Ferrars, her romantic sister Marianne is courted by both the handsome Willoughby and the hideous man-monster Colonel Brandon.
Thoughts
Hmmmm...
I actually LOVED this book!
I was not a big fan of the original (I know, I know... Shoot me now), I think I am probably the only woman who did not care for it.
I really liked the twist Ben Winters gave it.
I really liked all of the sea critters that were created during the "Alteration".
I guess that's because of the scary or horror movies I like ;o)
I would actually recommend it.
I am thinking about reading the book, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,
even though my friend Heather didn't like it.
I did not care for the original of that one either.
Maybe, I am just a weirdo for not liking the Classics everyone else is so fond of :o)
